Ongoing clinical study

Examination of eye movements in healthy subjects vs. subjects with visual dizziness

Dear participants, we - the research team from neurology and the eye clinic of the USZ - are looking for healthy volunteers for 2 harmless examinations of eye movements. We would be very happy if you would be interested in participating in one or both examinations! Kind regards Vergil Mavrodiev Research Fellow, Assistant Physician Department of Neurology Department of Ophthalmology University Hospital Zurich

Aim of the study

Visual vertigo is a very common and possibly underdiagnosed condition that can have a significant impact on patients' quality of life. The aim is to establish objective diagnostic and progression parameters for patients with visual vertigo, which will enable a targeted therapeutic approach and specific monitoring of the success of the therapy.

Who can take part?

1. participants over 18 years of age with no history of eye movement disorders or eye diseases that cannot be corrected with glasses or lenses 2. subjects over 18 years of age with a diagnosis of visually-induced vertigo. The criteria for this would be: a. Symptoms of dizziness or drowsiness most days over 3 months b. The dizziness can be intensified by movement or visual stimulation (e.g. driving a car or train and looking through the window) c. Significant stress occurs during the symptoms of vertigo d. You have no other dizziness that better explains the symptoms

Procedure

1. time required approx. 20 min - you sit in front of a screen and wear a so-called "eye tracking camera" - a camera that records your eye movements. At the same time, the projected background on the screen moves. Their only task would be to follow the dots on the wall. Meanwhile, their eye movements are recorded and analyzed at a later point in time. 2. time required approx. 40 min. You sit in a so-called swivel chair with a joystick in your hand. The swivel chair moves slowly in one direction and your only task would be to indicate with the joystick in which direction you think you are turning. Meanwhile, the background will sometimes move in the same or opposite direction.
