Georges Mayor (*1914; †1994) was a urologist with particular dedication to establishing Urology as an independent surgical specialty. He was among the first surgeons in Europe to perform nowadays well-established procedures such as ileal conduit for urinary diversion, retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy for metastatic testicular cancer, as well as adrenal gland surgery.
In 1970, Georges Mayor was appointed the first full professor of Urology at the University of Zurich and remained head of the Department of Urology until his retirement in 1983.
Georges Mayor played an integral role in the evolution of the specialty of Urology. He was not only president of Swiss Urology (SGU) in 1969/70, vice president of the Société Internationale d’Urologie (SIU) as of 1973, editor of Urologia Internationalis (1968-87), but also a founding member of the European Association of Urology (EAU) in 1975.
The Georges Mayor honorary lecture was established in 2016 to acknowledge Professor Mayor’s merits in advancing urology as an independent specialty in Zurich, Switzerland and Europe.
