Ultrasound musculoskeletal system

High-resolution ultrasound of the musculoskeletal system provides additional diagnostic information and facilitates therapeutic measures in direct addition to the clinical examination. As a non-invasive and comparatively inexpensive examination, this technique is particularly suitable for imaging diagnostics of the joints or soft tissues.

The examinations and interventions are carried out or supervised by senior physicians with many years of experience and an FMH title in rheumatology, who are also SGUM and SONAR tutors. Ultrasound is not only a recognized and validated tool in diagnostics, but is also suitable for monitoring a therapeutic measure (e.g. decrease in the synovitis score in rheumatoid arthritis under treatment). Ultrasound plays a very important role in targeted puncture or infiltration under visualization.

  • Joint inflammation (arthritis)
  • Osteoarthritis (wear and tear of the joints)
  • Bursitis (inflammation of the bursa)
  • Tendon attachment inflammation (tendon pathologies, enthesiopathy)
  • Enthesiopathies/enthesitis (e.g. epicondylitis, Achilles tendon enthesitis)
  • Ganglia (e.g. precise localization and atraumatic puncture)
  • Crystal diseases (gout, chondrocalcinosis)
  • Vessels (e.g. giant cell arteritis)
  • SONAR examinations for rheumatoid arthritis
  • Ultrasound-guided joint punctures and infiltrations (e.g. small finger joints)
  • Ultrasound-guided spinal injections (e.g. sacroiliac joint)
  • Ultrasound-guided needling for tendon calcifications (e.g. PHS calcarea)
  • Soft tissue (e.g. space-occupying lesions, muscles)

Training/observation

Doctors are trained in ultrasound examinations at the Clinic for Rheumatology. Supervision is provided by senior physicians with many years of experience and FMH qualifications in rheumatology, who are also SGUM and SONAR tutors. In addition, regular internal practical courses are held for doctors who work in the clinic or in the practice.
