Emergency psychiatry

Psychiatric emergencies are exceptional psychological situations that require immediate professional assessment and treatment. These include suicidal tendencies, states of confusion or anxiety and agitation. They can occur on the basis of a known psychiatric illness as well as in previously healthy people.

Our round-the-clock availability, specific knowledge of the entire diagnostic spectrum of psychiatric emergencies and cooperation with our colleagues in somatic medicine allow us to provide rapid and interdisciplinary treatment, even in cases where physical and mental illnesses occur together.

Services

The Clinic for Consultative Psychiatry and Psychosomatics at the USZ offers a 24-hour emergency service to all adults from the Canton of Zurich in psychiatric emergencies. Pre-registration is not required, but if possible, it would be appreciated. We also offer outpatient consultations in crisis situations at any time. As with physical emergencies, the costs of treatment are covered by health insurance.

If the assessment shows that further psychiatric treatment is sensible and necessary, whether as an outpatient, day clinic or inpatient, we will be happy to arrange this for you; we work closely with the psychiatric clinics in the canton.

We also offer brief therapy for patients who have attempted suicide.

Accessibility

We can only treat patients on site in the emergency ward. We are available by telephone 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
