Surgical tightening of drooping eyelids

Drooping eyelids bother many people because they change their facial expression. However, drooping upper eyelids can also cause eye inflammation or obstruct vision. A surgical eyelid lift can eliminate the problem.

Drooping eyelids are caused by excess skin in the upper eyelid area. Drooping eyelids often lead to a facial expression of tiredness or irritability. Drooping eyelids are therefore a medically harmless problem in many cases, but their effect can be very distressing for those affected. However, if the elasticity of the eyelid skin gradually decreases or is extremely pronounced, drooping eyelids can also restrict the field of vision or push eyelashes into the eye, causing inflammation. This sagging process is often accompanied by a so-called brow ptosis, i.e. the sagging of the forehead skin. This can be recognized very well by the fact that the eyebrow is increasingly lower. Drooping eyelids can be corrected with a minor procedure.

Procedure for drooping eyelid lifting

During surgical tightening of the skin of the upper eyelids (medical blepharoplasty), both excess skin and protruding fat, which actually surrounds the eyeball, are removed, depending on the severity of the drooping eyelids. The incision and thus the scars run in the fold of the eyelid. The scars are therefore barely visible in typical cases. In the vast majority of cases, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia.

Back home on the same day

The procedure is performed in an operating theater and on an outpatient basis, i.e. you come to the clinic on the day of the operation and can go home the same day.

Before the operation

Before the drooping eyelid operation, we will discuss your ideas and wishes in a detailed consultation. We explain step by step how to tighten the upper eyelids. Painkillers that affect blood clotting (e.g. aspirin) should be avoided for 14 days before the operation. We also recommend that you do not smoke for two weeks before and after the operation.

Possible complications

Minor bruising may occur after the operation. In the beginning, the eye can also be very sensitive to light, even to the point of conjunctivitis. As with all operations, there is a risk of post-operative bleeding, infection, impaired wound healing or excessive scarring.

After the operation

The stitches are removed after one week. We recommend avoiding the sun for approx. 12 months after the procedure or ensuring you have adequate sun protection (SPF 50+).
