Acute whiplash injury (distortion of the cervical spine), physiotherapeutic treatment

After a whiplash injury (sprain/strain of the cervical spine), muscles, joints and ligaments are the most common sources of complaints. These structures are sensitive to pain, but have a good healing potential.

Nerves, intervertebral discs and bones are rarely affected. Often no injury to the neck structures can be detected by imaging. The acute discomfort/pain subsides as healing progresses. Most whiplash injuries heal completely.

Treatment

The therapy is aimed at patients following an accident involving the cervical spine. Early therapy (up to three weeks after the accident) improves the healing process. Prolonged gentle behavior is not recommended

The following measures are carried out on the basis of an examination interview and a clinical examination adapted to the patient’s condition:

  • Specific information and advice on the healing process
  • Instructions on how to put theoretical knowledge into practice
  • Instruction in active self-mobilization
  • Promoting personal responsibility
  • Adapted daily management (stress phases alternating with relief phases)
  • Adapted exercise and training program

The aim of the therapy is to optimize the healing process, prevent the symptoms from becoming chronic and maintain the patient’s ability to work. Most people are fully reintegrated into their normal everyday life after six weeks.

For patients

The therapy services are primarily available to patients of the USZ. The prescription for the therapy is issued and sent by your doctor. As a patient, you cannot register directly for a consultation/therapy.
