As a university-based PCOS center, we offer patients suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) comprehensive and holistic diagnostics, care and treatment. PCO syndrome can be accompanied by a number of concomitant diseases. Experts from a wide range of disciplines work closely together to respond to individual needs and define a precisely tailored treatment pathway for each patient.
PCOS is a disease with varying manifestations and is the most common endocrinological disorder in young women. Some sufferers experience irregular (oligomenorrhea) or absent bleeding (amenorrhea). In rare cases, menstrual cycles are shortened (polymenorrhea). Others suffer from skin problems or increased body hair, possibly due to increased male hormones in the blood (hyperandrogenemia). Often, but not always, the ovaries have an above-average number of small follicles, giving this clinical picture the somewhat misleading name “polycystic ovary syndrome”.
About the diseasePCOS can lead to long-term consequences such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes mellitus, mental illnesses such as depression or even endometrial cancer. In addition, the many follicles can prevent regular ovulation and thus lead to reduced fertility. Cosmetic problems (increased body hair, acne) can also affect your quality of life.
Based on the latest scientific findings, experts from various disciplines offer a wide range of advice and treatment for PCOS. The clinics for Reproductive Endocrinology, Endocrinology, Diabetology and Clinical Nutrition as well as Dermatology work closely together. Depending on the individual situation, we offer psychological support and other therapies (e.g. exercise therapy) in and outside the USZ.
