Histopathology

In the Histopathology Department of the Institute of Pathology and Molecular Pathology at the University Hospital Zurich, tissue samples - from particles just a few millimeters in size (biopsies) to large surgical specimens - are examined macroscopically and microscopically. This (fine) tissue examination of pathological tissue changes enables a fast, cost-effective and precise diagnosis of diseases.

For many diseases, especially tumors, histopathology is the gold standard of diagnostics. It also provides crucial information for the prognosis of diseases and for therapeutic decisions. A number of special techniques such as histo- and immunohistochemical examinations are used in histopathology for defined questions.
