Choline PET (parathyroid)

Choline is an endogenous substance and is absorbed by cells with a high membrane turnover and built into the cell wall. The 18F choline PET / CT or PET / MR is a very sensitive examination for the diagnosis and localization of parathyroid adenomas in patients with hyperparathyroidism. The examination is suitable for primary clarification as well as for patients who have not previously been clarified using other imaging methods (success rate> 90%).

Detected parathyroid adenoma (arrow) in front of the trachea. 18F-choline PET imaging can still occasionally be used for the clarification of prostate cancer patients. Since 2016, however, 18F-PSMA has been priorised.

Indications

The following indications are reimbursed by the health insurance:

  • Primary hyperparathyroidism (after unsuccessful conventional imaging)
  • Prostate cancer: primary staging in high-risk cancer, biochemical relapse (PSA increase after radical therapy)
