Interventional neuroradiology

Interventional neuroradiology includes all minimally invasive examinations and treatments of vascular diseases of the central nervous system. With these methods, only a small incision is made in the groin or wrist and the vessels are penetrated in order to treat them. Major open surgery is therefore not necessary. Compared to open surgery, the treatment risks are lower with these minimally invasive methods and patients recover more quickly from the procedure.

Interventional methods are used in many cases. Our experts treat strokes (ischemic and hemorrhagic) and provide preventive treatment for vascular malformations and other diseases of the brain and spine.

Cases that can be treated using interventional methods include

  • the reopening of blocked or severely constricted vessels in ischemic strokes
  • the treatment of cerebral aneurysms that have burst and caused a severe cerebral hemorrhage or aneurysms that have an increased risk of bleeding.
  • Vascular malformations such as arteriovenous malformations (AVM) of the brain and spinal column as well as vascular diseases of the venous system of the brain (dural arteriovenous fistula)
  • Diseases of the tear ducts

Under Prof. Anton Valavanis, the Department of Neuroradiology played a key role in the development of the field of interventional neuroradiology. Thanks to this pioneering work, interventional neuroradiology is now a specialty of the USZ and our clinic is an internationally renowned institution known for minimally invasive treatments.

At the Department of Neuroradiology, we use the most modern interventional methods, the most advanced materials and instruments and the latest imaging techniques. You will be looked after by experts with many years of experience. This enables us to offer every patient the best possible treatment.

Partner network

We also work very closely with other USZ clinics, e.g. the Neurology, Neurosurgery and Ear, Nose and Throat Clinics, in order to provide our patients with the best treatment methods. In weekly conferences with our partners, we develop a therapy concept for each case, which we then discuss with our patients. In addition, our doctors are supported by outstanding nursing and rehabilitation specialists.
