Oncology

Oncology at the University Hospital Zurich offers comprehensive diagnosis and treatment options for cancer. With modern therapies and an interdisciplinary approach, we ensure the best possible, individually tailored care for our patients.

Diagnostics and state-of-the-art technology in oncology

Our Department of General Oncology carries out investigations of unclear findings that indicate a malignant cancer. We rely on pioneering diagnostic procedures and modern technologies. Through innovative approaches, we enable precise and individualized treatment plans.

Therapy offer: Oncology

Oncology at the University Hospital Zurich offers a wide range of modern and individualized treatment approaches. These include traditional methods such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, as well as innovative therapies such as immunotherapy and targeted therapies that are specifically tailored to the genetic characteristics of the tumor. We also treat metastasized, advanced cancers whose origin cannot be assigned to one organ.

As a university hospital, we are actively involved in research into new, promising tumor therapies. Patients benefit from participating in clinical trials that provide access to the latest, not yet established treatments. The range of services is supplemented by palliative measures to alleviate symptoms and holistic approaches such as integrative oncology to promote the physical and mental well-being of patients.

Last but not least, we are supported by experienced and dedicated specialist staff from our oncology nursing department. We also benefit from interdisciplinary collaboration with specialists from various disciplines within the framework of so-called tumor boards.

Integrative oncology

In general oncology, we pay particular attention to alleviating the symptoms caused by cancer. This also includes side effects that can occur as a result of chemotherapy, such as the treatment of:

  • Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite

Where necessary and on request, we use methods of integrative oncology, in which conventional cancer treatments are combined with complementary methods to promote the patient’s wellbeing holistically. It includes approaches such as acupuncture, yoga, meditation, nutritional therapy and herbal remedies, which are used alongside standard medical treatment. The aim is to alleviate the side effects of cancer therapy, strengthen the immune system and improve patients’ quality of life. Close cooperation between oncologists and specialists in complementary medicine enables an individual treatment plan to be drawn up that takes both physical and emotional needs into account.

FAQ on the topic of oncology

Oncology is the medical specialty that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and aftercare of cancer. Oncologists are experts in the treatment of tumor diseases and work closely with other specialist areas to develop individual therapies.

Common cancers include lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer and bowel cancer.

Cancer is diagnosed and treated in oncology. This includes examinations such as blood tests, biopsies and imaging procedures to determine the type and stage of the cancer. Oncologists draw up individual treatment plans based on this.

A visit to the oncologist is necessary if cancer is suspected or has been diagnosed. An oncologist is also the right person to contact for check-ups after surviving cancer or for advice on possible genetic risks.
