Vascular prosthesis infections Treatment

We provide interdisciplinary care for patients with vascular prosthesis infections together with our colleagues from cardiovascular surgery and radiology.

Antibiotic therapy

We treat patients with vascular prosthesis infections with long-term antibiotic therapy. The type of antibiotic therapy depends on the microbiological diagnosis. As a rule, patients receive six weeks of iv antibiotic therapy, followed by oral follow-up therapy. The duration of antibiotic therapy is determined using PET/CT.

Surgical technique

As a rule, patients undergo vascular prosthesis-preserving surgery with extensive surgical debridement and topical negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). In exceptional cases, the vascular prosthesis must be removed.

Research

We conduct research in the field of vascular prosthesis infections and are supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Patients with vascular prosthesis infections are included in the VASGRA cohort study.

For patients

For medical clarifications, we recommend that you consult your general practitioner with a possible referral to the Clinic for Infectiology and Hospital Hygiene USZ for more in-depth clarifications.

If you would like a telephone consultation for infectiological inquiries without a consultation, you can call our toll-free number. The costs are not covered by health insurance as it is purely a telephone counseling service, not a medical consultation.
