Endosonography – oral

Endosonography allows ultrasound examination from the inside, i.e. from the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. The examination can be used to assess the wall structures of these organs on the one hand, and on the other to view neighboring organs such as the pancreas, liver, gallbladder and lymph nodes.

Procedure

An infusion is first placed in the arm to administer sleeping and sedative medication. A thin, movable “tube” with a light source and a camera attached to its tip is used for the examination. This allows the doctor to inspect the mucous membrane of the organs mentioned and look for pathological changes. The examination and the additional procedures do not cause any pain.

Endosonography differs from gastroscopy only in that a special device with an ultrasound device at the tip is used. If a tissue sample is taken with a needle (EUS-guided fine needle aspiration), this is done during the same examination without you noticing anything. Taking the sample is painless. In addition to the doctor, a specially trained nurse (nurse and practice assistant) is present during the examination.

Preparation

Please do not eat any solid food from midnight before the endosonography, as the upper digestive tract must be free of food residues for the gastroscopy. Drinking clear, fat-free liquids (no milk) is permitted up to two hours before entry. Do not take your regular medication unless your doctor specifically advises you to do so.

Aftercare

After local anesthesia of the throat with a spray, you must not eat or drink anything for at least one hour. If you experience abdominal pain or other symptoms (e.g. dizziness, nausea, vomiting) after the gastroscopy or if blood comes out of the anus (usually in the form of black, runny stools), inform your doctor immediately or go to an emergency ward.
