Diagnostics
Due to the large number of possible differential diagnoses, laboratory diagnostics are essential for the detection of a fungal infection. A direct microscopy is carried out in the laboratory and a culture is created on several culture media, which are incubated for up to four weeks.
Treatment
For smaller, localized and mild infections, treatment is topical, for example with nail polish or a cream containing antimycotics. Systemic treatment with antimycotics is necessary in the case of large-scale, chronic or severely inflamed infections affecting several areas.
Internationally recognized test center
The dermatology clinic treats many patients with fungal skin infections. The dermatology clinic’s accredited laboratory is a nationally and internationally recognized test center for fungal skin infections. For example, our laboratory is a reference laboratory for the dermatomycological round robin tests of INSTAND e.V. (German Association for the Promotion of Quality Assurance in Medical Laboratories). In addition, research papers on fungal skin infections are published regularly.
