Kaposi’s sarcoma therapy

At the University Hospital Zurich, patients with Kaposi's sarcoma are mainly cared for at the Skin Cancer Center, if necessary also on an interdisciplinary basis with the Infectiology Department of the University Hospital or at the Sarcoma Center of the University Hospital.

Kaposi's sarcoma: Aftercare

In many cases, no treatment is necessary at all. This applies in particular to minimal manifestations in the context of Kaposi’s sarcoma in older patients on the legs (Mediterranean type). If the skin changes increase and are disturbing, a superficial soft X-ray therapy can be performed first. Immune treatments such as the defense hormone interferon can be considered for internal treatment. Other treatments include special chemotherapy with specially packaged chemotherapeutic agents.

Course

In many cases, the disease can be well controlled with the various treatments. However, if an aggressive carposarcoma is present in a severely weakened immune system, it can also take an aggressive course and become life-threatening. There is a chance of recovery if the function of the immune system can be fully restored. Please refer patients with this clinical picture to Prof. Dr. Reinhard Dummer, Head of the USZ Skin Cancer Center.

Prevent

Exact prevention rules are not known, but as described above, good immune function is important.
