FAQ about oral and maxillofacial surgery

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon is a specially trained surgeon (specialist) who specializes in surgical procedures in the oral and maxillofacial region, including operations on the oral cavity, jaw and facial bones and soft tissues, including the neck.

To become a specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery, you need to have completed a degree in both human medicine and dentistry. Oral surgeons are therefore doctors and dentists who have also completed specialist training.

Orthodontics deals with the correction of misaligned teeth and jaw anomalies using orthodontic appliances such as braces.

Maxillofacial surgery, on the other hand, refers to surgical procedures of the oral cavity, jaw and facial bones as well as the soft tissues of the face and neck, e.g. to treat fractures, tumors and facial deformities or malformations.

Surgery in the oral and maxillofacial region is typically necessary to correct jaw malpositions, treat facial injuries including fractures, remove tumors, surgically remove inflammation and treat serious jaw anomalies or facial malformations.

Oral surgery includes surgical procedures on the teeth (e.g. tooth extractions, wisdom tooth removal, root tip resections), the surrounding bone (e.g. dental implants) and minor procedures on the oral mucosa (e.g. biopsies, oral mucosa transplants). Oral surgery is therefore a sub-area of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Oral surgeons are dentists who have undergone additional training to become specialists in oral surgery.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are both doctors and dentists who have additional specialist training in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Her spectrum includes surgical procedures of the entire face and neck area as well as the oral cavity (including oral surgery).

Oral surgeons are dentists who have undergone additional training to become specialists in oral surgery. The oral surgery spectrum includes teeth (e.g. tooth extractions, wisdom tooth removal, apicoectomies), the surrounding bone (e.g. dental implants) and minor procedures on the oral mucosa (e.g. biopsies, oral mucosa grafts).

MKG is the short form for the german term “Mund-, Kiefer- und Gesichtschirurgie” (translated: oral and maxillofacial surgery).

The job title of dental surgeon does not exist. This most likely refers to the field of activity of an oral surgeon (see above).
