As a university hospital, we are highly specialized and through the interdisciplinary exchange between experts in surgery, gastroenterology, oncology and radio-oncology, we are able to offer the most advanced therapeutic and surgical procedures, such as ablation procedures, complex surgical resections (including minimally intensive robotic-assisted surgery) to organ transplantation, as well as radiotherapy and targeted systemic and immunotherapies. Research at the Liver and Pancreas Tumor Center

At the Liver and Pancreas Tumor Center, we actively conduct research to develop better diagnostic and therapeutic approaches against tumor diseases of the liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts. The focal points of our research are:

• “ALPPS” (Associating Liver Partition and Portal Vein Ligation for Staged Hepatectomy) is a two-stage procedure with unprecedented liver regeneration. Patients with tumors previously considered inoperable can be treated with this novel surgical procedure. The relevant data are entered into the international “ALPPS Registry“. The collected data will be analyzable and made available for research purposes.
• “Wyss Machine Clinical Trial” – Liver transplantation after prolonged normothermic machine perfusion. Planning is underway for a Phase 2 clinical trial with three liver transplant programs in Switzerland (Geneva, Bern and Zurich).
• “Benchmarks for Living Donor Liver TPL (LDLT)” and “Benchmarks for Major Anatomic Liver Resection” -.
  Benchmarking compares business processes and key performance indicators with industry “best practices” of other companies and serves to define quality standards. Applied to surgery, the goal of our current “benchmark studies” is to define criteria for the best possible surgical treatment. The introduction of standardized benchmarks for complex procedures may lead to improved outcomes for the individual patient, or to improved surgical treatment concepts.
