For decades, cancer registries worldwide have made a significant contribution to research into the causes of cancer and the fight against cancer by assessing cancer incidence and thus cancer risks. The Federal Cancer Registration Act, which regulates the nationwide recording of cancer cases and certain precancerous lesions, has been in force since January 1, 2020.

Since 1980, the Canton of Zurich has maintained an epidemiological cancer registry at the Institute of Pathology and Molecular Pathology at the University Hospital Zurich in close collaboration with the Institute of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention (EBPI) at the University of Zurich. The register has also been collecting data for the canton of Zug since 2011, and for the cantons of Schaffhausen and Schwyz since January 1, 2020.
The core task of the registry is to record as many new cases of cancer in the population as possible and thus to document the cancer burden of the population in the form of monitoring.
The new Cancer Registration Act (KRG) and the associated Cancer Registration Ordinance (KRV) ensure that the necessary cancer data is collected comprehensively, fully and completely. Doctors, laboratories, hospitals and other private or public healthcare institutions are legally obliged to report relevant data to the cancer registry.
