In erythrophobia, the uncontrollable blushing of the facial skin is accompanied by a feeling of heat all over the head or in certain parts of the face.
The diagnosis is made clinically.
The therapy consists primarily of behavioral therapy. The aim of the therapy is for patients to learn to see blushing not as a disaster, but as an annoying but non-threatening reaction of their body. Before an operation, various psychological examinations are carried out in order to exhaust all possible non-surgical measures.
If conservative therapy does not bring the desired success, in rare cases (!) the same operation described for hyperhidrosis can be considered. The potential complications are the same, but they occur much more frequently. A sympathectomy for erythrophobia is usually preceded by several consultations. However, surgery is often not recommended, partly because the chances of success are moderate.
