Electroneuromyography (ENMG)

The electrophysiological examination of central motor functions, peripheral nerves, neuromuscular transmission and muscles using electroneuromyography (ENMG) is of great importance in the diagnosis of neuromuscular diseases in order to obtain information on the type and cause of the disease.

The ENMG department is embedded in the Neuromuscular Center Zurich.

During an ENMG examination, different examination methods are used depending on the clinical question:

  • Electroneurography (ENG): Determination of nerve conductivity by means of electrical stimulation.
  • Electromyography (EMG): Analysis of electrical muscle activity by means of needle examination.
  • Examination of the motor end plate: measurement of signal transmission from the nerve to the muscle using repetitive (repeated) nerve stimulation and stimulated single-fiber ENMG (ssFEMG)
  • Autonomic function testing: examination of the autonomic nervous system by determining the sympathetic sudomotor response (SSR) and the R-R interval variation
  • Motor evoked potentials (MEP): Examination of the motor nerves in the spinal cord and brain
    by means of magnetic pulses.

In addition to these diagnostic ENMG examinations, we carry out a botulinum toxin consultation in collaboration with the Parkinson’s/movement disorders and stroke/neuroangiology departments, where patients with focal movement disorders or spasticity are treated.

  • Focal dystonia: e.g. torticollis spasmodicus, writer’s cramp
  • Facial movement disorders: e.g. blepharospasm, facial hemispasm
  • Focal spasticity: e.g. after stroke, cerebral palsy, trauma
