General practitioners are indispensable for the medical care of the population. Their work covers a broad spectrum – from prevention to palliative care – and requires special diagnostic skills.

GPs are important contacts for patients with chronic or multiple illnesses. They coordinate treatment, prioritize medication and thus ensure their patients’ quality of life. At the same time, they are reliable guides in the complex healthcare system.

Despite the proven importance of family medicine, research on primary care lags behind clinical research. The Institute of Primary Care is working to close this gap through practical studies in a network of family doctors committed to research.

The Chair of Primary Care at the University of Zurich represents the academic representation of the specialty in teaching and research. The Institute of Primary Care at the University Hospital Zurich provides the operational platform for this.
