Research into a new synbiotic food supplement to support the gut microbiome after antibiotic therapy against C. difficile.

Research into a new synbiotic food supplement (combination of probiotic cultures and prebiotic carbohydrates) to support the intestinal microbiome after antibiotic therapy.

Aim of the study

After antibiotic treatment, the composition and function of the intestinal microbiota is disturbed and the defense mechanisms against potentially pathogenic germs such as Clostridioides difficile can be weakened. This can lead to a new C. difficile infection or another so-called antibiotic-associated diarrhea. With this study we want to investigate whether a new synbiotic dietary supplement can support the defense mechanisms of the intestinal microbiota against potentially pathogenic germs. Nagasin® contains probiotic cultures with an antimicrobial effect and oligofructose.

Who can take part?

We are looking for women and men aged 18-95 who have been diagnosed with C. difficile infection for a scientific study.

Procedure

After completing the antibiotic treatment against the C. difficile infection, you will receive the synbiotic food supplement or the comparative substance maltodextrin once a day for four weeks. During this time, you will collect 5 stool samples and be contacted 5 times for a telephone interview. After a 4-week follow-up period, you will collect a final stool sample and be contacted by telephone for a final consultation. During the study period, you enter information about your bowel movements in a study diary. The study includes: - 1 suitability visit of max. 1 hour duration at the University Hospital Zurich - 5 telephone interviews of approx. 5-10 min. - short daily entries in a study diary of approx. 1-2 minutes No further high-dose probiotics may be consumed during the study.
