PRP treatment (autologous blood therapy) for hair loss

In platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, the body's own blood platelets are concentrated in an innovative therapeutic procedure and used to stimulate hair growth.

This is a natural, non-surgical solution to hair loss and thinning. This regenerative therapy stimulates the hair follicles and supports the growth of new, healthy hair. PRP-Behandlung bei einer Patientin mit Haarausfall

PRP treatment procedure

PRP treatment begins with a blood sample taken from the patient. The blood is then processed in a centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich plasma. Once the PRP has been prepared, it is carefully injected into areas of the scalp affected by hair loss. We use fine needles to make the process as comfortable as possible. A treatment takes about 30-45 minutes. For optimal results, several sessions at intervals of 1-4 months are usually required.

“PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatment at the University Hospital Zurich is an option for supporting hair growth in cases of hair loss.”

Christian Greis, Senior Physician

Preparation

In order to obtain sufficient plasma, it is advisable for patients to drink 0.5 – 1 liter before the treatment.

Aftercare

Aftercare following treatment is uncomplicated. We advise you not to wash your hair for 24-48 hours after the treatment and to refrain from sport, bathing, going to the sauna and sunbathing during this period. You should also refrain from using aggressive hair care products or chemical treatments for a few days.

What are the side effects of PRP?

A slight sensitivity of the scalp, mild itching, discrete redness and swelling as well as headaches may occur after the treatment, but usually disappear within a day.

How long does it take for autohaemotherapy to take effect?

  • First improvements: Some patients notice initial improvements after around 2 to 3 months.
This can take the form of less hair loss, better hair quality or even the first signs of new hair growth.
  • Clear results: For more noticeable and stable results, it may take 4 to 6 months.
During this time, a series of 3 to 4 PRP treatments are typically performed about a month apart.
  • Maximum results: The best results are often visible after 6 to 12 months.
During this time, the hair has enough time to grow and strengthen.

It is important to note that the effectiveness of PRP therapy depends on various factors, including the stage of hair loss, the patient’s individual response to treatment and the underlying cause of hair loss.
Regular follow-up treatments may be required to maintain the results achieved.

What does the PRP treatment cost?

The treatment is usually paid for by the patient and is not reimbursed by the health insurance company. A single PRP treatment for hair loss costs around CHF 500. It is therefore not necessary to be referred by your family doctor or dermatologist.
