Peritoneal dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis is the most common form of home dialysis worldwide. In peritoneal dialysis, flushing fluid (dialysate) is regularly introduced into the abdominal cavity via a catheter. Draining the dialysate draws fluid from the body and removes toxins.

The procedure can be carried out during the day with regular dialysate changes (three to four times) or at night using a machine. Patients on peritoneal dialysis only need to visit their dialysis center every four to five weeks for a check-up.

Our clarification and treatment options

We support our patients in deciding on a dialysis procedure: There are only a few reasons why peritoneal dialysis is not possible. The most common reason is the patient’s decision not to undergo the procedure.

As one of the largest centers in Switzerland, our team of doctors and nurses has a great deal of experience in dealing with peritoneal dialysis. We care for between 25 and 30 peritoneal dialysis patients. It is therefore important to us that patients view the procedure without prejudice. If the decision is made in favor of the procedure, we support its implementation.

Cooperation at the USZ

Our colleagues in visceral surgery place the required catheters around 14 days before the start of dialysis.
