Fatigue fracture treatment

The treatment of a fatigue fracture (stress fracture) depends on how badly the bone is damaged and where the fracture is located.

It is often sufficient to put less strain on the affected body part until the bone has regenerated. If fractures in the foot or lower leg are pronounced, treatment with immobilization in a cast can also help. Regular examinations are carried out to monitor the healing process. In some cases, surgery may even be necessary.

A fatigue fracture usually heals completely if it is recognized and treated in time. Depending on the extent of the fracture, however, this can take several weeks to months. Smoking has a detrimental effect on bone healing due to impaired blood circulation in the smallest vessels.
