The USZ outpatient health center in The Circle neighborhood at the airport, which opened in October 2020, reached the 1000 patients per day mark at the beginning of February. More than 20 specialties offer consultations, treatments and outpatient surgeries in the state-of-the-art infrastructure.
Since opening in October 2020, more than 20 University Hospital Zurich specialties have moved outpatient consultations to the airport health center. About a quarter of all outpatient visits at the USZ now take place at “USZ Airport.” In the state-of-the-art infrastructure, consultations including diagnostics in the field of laboratory medicine and radiology take place, as well as radiation treatments, dialyses, endoscopies, treatments in the day clinic and outpatient procedures. The range of services and capacity utilization have been gradually increased as planned since the opening. At the beginning of February 2023, cardiology, nephrology and rheumatology moved additional consultation hours to USZ Airport.
Three operating rooms
Modern anesthesia and surgical methods make it possible to perform more and more diagnostic and surgical procedures on an outpatient basis, for which an inpatient stay in the hospital was necessary only a short time ago. This is not only interesting from an economic point of view, but also has several advantages for patients in particular: they only have to plan one day for the operation, can go home the same day and recover in familiar surroundings. Around 3,600 operations are performed in the three operating theaters at USZ Airport each year; the most common outpatient operations are cataract removal (phaco surgery) and metal removal.
Special consultation hours
There are health problems for which several specialties must be consulted, for example, dizziness, abdominal pain or chronic pain. The USZ offers its patients interdisciplinary special consultations for these problems. The appointments with the various specialists are bundled as far as possible and reasonable in terms of time – the time required for clarification and the path to diagnosis and therapy thus remain short for the patients.
“We can offer our patients coordinated and optimal processes for their appointments at USZ Airport. In addition, we have a state-of-the-art infrastructure with the latest generation of equipment – and all this in a bright and friendly atmosphere,” says Philipp Kaufmann, Medical Director of the Outpatient Medical Division, summarizing the advantages of the location. Patients and employees alike also appreciate the easy accessibility by public transport.
