Quality of nurse-patient interaction in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: A mixed methods study

Hier wird in Kürze eine laienverständliche Zusammenfassung der Studienresultate veröffentlicht.

Original-Studienbeschreibung

Nurse-patient interaction (NPI) plays an important part in effective, person-centered care delivery that meets patients' needs, and has been shown to increase patient health and well-being. NPI is influenced by a variety of factors, including workload, available organisational support, socio-cultural values and the characteristics, needs, and abilities of the individuals involved. The current COVID-19 pandemic poses a threat to the quality of NPI, as nurses spend as little time as possible in patients' rooms or home and wear protective gear. Patients on the other hand, experience profound uncertainty in illness, limited communication and social interactions, leading to increased social isolation, which increases psychosocial distress.

Ziel der Studie

Ablauf

Patient and nurse perception and experience of their interactions in the home and hospital context will be obtained through individual interviews with 30-40 patients and four focus group interviews with 6-8 nurses each. Equal representation of setting will be ensured through purposive sampling. Interview data will be analysed using grounded theory techniques, such as coding, constant comparison, and the development of categories and interrelationships. Quality of nursepatient interaction will be obtained through a cross-sectional survey using the Individualized Care Scale patient and nurse versions, aiming for a sample size of 334 patients and nurses. Analysis will include descriptive statistics according to level of data and explore relationships between participants and settings. Data will be merged after initial analysis to compare commonalities and divergences across qualitative and quantitative data as well as between nurse and patient perceptions.
